Hi again folks! Very sorry that I just got the chance to post. My schedules are quite packed these couple of months, so please bear with me. My story starts in a typical Saturday afternoon. I was with my sister, on the way to meet my friend in the Thamrin area. Before meeting my friend though, I decided to hunt for a specialty coffee shop. I instantly recalled seeing instagram posts of a humble, tiny coffee shop in Thamrin City.
It took me a while to find Tanamera. It turns out that the coffee shop was located in the office complex, located a few hundred meters away from Thamrin City’s main building. So, the next time you want to come, make sure you get into the right complex, or else the walk is going to be quite a workout! Well, at least that’s what I experienced. LOL!

Finally after the unexpected “workout session”, I have arrived. The place wasn’t very fancy, but it definitely has what I would describe as a more minimalistic approach in terms of design. The place is warm, vibrant and inviting! The coffee shop has a rectangular layout with a narrow corridor, just enough for a single line of people to pass by. Even though the space was narrow, that’s what makes this coffee shop special. Because the tables are placed very close to each other, sometimes customers will start talking to each other, therefore creating connections among customers.
The main highlights of Tanamera are their enormous coffee roaster, a 2-group Slayer espresso machine and their preferred brewing method, the Kalita Wave. As far as I know, Tanamera is the only shop that is equipped with a Diedrich coffee roaster. I’m not a roaster, but as a barista, I know that a Diedrich machine cost a fortune and will not only burn a hole in most people’s pockets, but also will produce some of the best roasted coffee.
Moving on to the espresso machine! Tanamera uses a 2-group Slayer espresso machine. Besides the fact that it will also burn a hole in most people’s pockets (LOL!), the Slayer is also an excellent machine capable of extracting the very best potential in coffee. I use this kind of machine myself during my internship and it produces excellent espresso with great crema.
Tanamera usually serves two different coffees for their espresso, a single origin and a blend. I noticed that Tanamera has a few different blends: an espresso blend, a signature blend and a premium blend. I’m not sure whether signature blend is the same as the premium blend, since I forgot the taste of the signature blend. However, this is what I can say about their blends – Espresso blend is usually prepared for those looking for chocolaty and nutty notes without too much acidity – a classic. However, if you’re looking for something with more brightness and complexity, premium blend is the perfect choice! The blend itself consist of Aceh Natural, Java Ciwidey and a third coffee that I couldn’t remember. It creates an espresso with notes of Mandarin, caramel and chocolate. The body is balanced and the finish is rather clean as far as I can remember.

Besides serving espresso-based drinks, Tanamera also serves a range of Indonesian single-origin filtered coffee. Tanamera uses a coffee filter called Kalita Wave. It originates in Japan and produces coffee that is generally more fruity and light-bodied than a V60. This suits Tanamera perfectly since they also provide coffee with a light body and a pronounced fruitiness such as Natural-Processed Aceh Gayo, Padang Solok and Papua Wamena.
Tanamera also serves a selection of all-day breakfast and baked goods to go along with your coffee. One of the must have items here is their Banana Caramel Cake. Soft, spongy banana cake decorated with gorgeous dark chocolate chips and drizzled with luscious and decadent caramel sauce, this cake fits perfectly into the “must-have” category when visiting Tanamera.
If you are a fan of poached eggs and English muffins, you may want to try their eggs benedict. Poached eggs served on top of two stips of fried pork bacon (that’s right!) sitting on top of toasted English muffin, all topped with a light holandaise sauce… The poached eggs are nicely cooked with silky, oozy yolk and soft egg whites, while the bacon lends the dish a nice smoky and salty touch. The holandaise sauce has just the right amount of tang to balance the whole dish, cutting through the richness of the egg and bacon, but at the same time moistening the muffin base. It might not be the best eggs benedict I’ve tasted, but it will suffice as breakfast or even light lunch in my opinion. If you have dietary restrictions regarding to pork, you can try Eggs Florentine instead.
I have been coming to this coffee shop a lot after my first visit. From those visits I can conclude that Tanamera is not only a place to enjoy great coffee, but it has become more of a neighborhood spot, a magnet for its community. Whether it’s the young executives working around the area, parents dropping their kids to school, or college students working on their thesis, when people come to Tanamera, no matter their background, they know that they will feel accepted by a hospitable environement with friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere, For me, that’s the essence of what Tanamera is – friendliness, acceptance, hospitality that reflects the true face of our nation, and above all, Indonesian coffee made with passion and served with great pride. That is what makes them unmistakably Indonesian, and I think that it is what we, the Indonesian coffee community, should always strive to achieve! Salud! ^^
